A police case has been filed against YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia and several others in Assam over offensive and sexually explicit comments made during comedian Samay Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent. The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with the accused being charged for promoting obscenity and engaging in vulgar discussions. The other individuals named in the case include Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, and Samay Raina.
The controversy erupted after Allahbadia’s inappropriate remark on the show, where he asked a contestant, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?” This statement led to a massive backlash, prompting multiple police complaints across the country. Assam Police were the first to file a case, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the development via a tweet. Other legal complaints have been lodged in Mumbai, where advocates Ashish Ray and Pankaj Mishra have urged authorities to take action, stating that the remarks disrespect women and violate legal provisions.
Widespread Condemnation and Apology from Ranveer Allahbadia
The controversy has drawn sharp criticism from political leaders and social activists. Commentator Rahul Easwar has filed a complaint under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, while BJP functionary Nilotpal Mrinal Pandey has lodged a complaint with Mumbai’s Khar Police. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also reacted, saying, “I have been informed about this, though I have not watched it yet. I came to know that it was very vulgar, and this is wrong. Freedom of speech has limits, and action will be taken if those limits are crossed.”
Following the backlash, Ranveer Allahbadia issued a public apology. In a video statement on X (formerly Twitter), he admitted, “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s Got Latent. I’m sorry… My comment wasn’t just inappropriate, it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte; I am just here to say sorry.”
The show India’s Got Latent has been under scrutiny for its unparliamentary language and crude humor, with participants frequently making offensive remarks about women and marginalized groups. This latest controversy has intensified calls for stronger regulation of online content, with many urging platforms to enforce stricter content moderation policies to prevent such incidents in the future.
